A collector’s provenance checklist
Separate the object you can see from the story you are being sold.
Describe the visible evidence
Record material, measurements, construction, marks and condition. Ask for front, back and detail photographs. An attribution to a unit, person or event is a separate claim. Keep these two types of information distinct when you compare listings.
Request records when the story drives the price
If a personal connection or historical event is the reason for a premium, ask what documentation accompanies the item. Read what the document actually establishes. A later handwritten note does not necessarily prove who used the object or when.
Compare references carefully
Use references relevant to the exact object and period. Similar-looking examples can differ in materials or construction. A forum opinion may help identify questions to ask, but it should not substitute for strong evidence when the price is substantial.
Keep your own purchase record
Retain the listing description, seller correspondence and photographs for your collection file. Describe uncertain claims as uncertain when you catalogue an item. For expensive purchases, seek an independent specialist opinion before committing rather than relying on this general checklist as authentication.
