Inspecting a surplus pack
A bag can look great in one photo and hide damage where the load hangs.
Check the load points
Inspect shoulder-strap anchors, handles, waist-belt connections and the bottom corners. Ask for close-ups of seams under load. Thin fabric or a repair at a stressed attachment point matters more than a harmless scuff on the front.
Inventory the components
A listing may offer a bag alone, a frame alone or a complete assembly. Write down the components you expect. Confirm straps, buckles, frame and belt individually. Check compatibility rather than assuming parts from similarly named systems will attach.
Ask about storage condition
Request information about odor, mildew, tacky coatings and fabric deterioration. Look at interior photos. Long storage does not guarantee good condition, even if a bag was never issued. Confirm whether the seller has inspected the specific bag being supplied.
Match the bag to your use
Compare dimensions with what you carry. Check the empty weight and adjustment range when supplied by the seller. For daily use, working closures and comfortable fit may beat historical appeal. For collecting, later repairs and replacement hardware can affect the kind of example you are buying.
