FIELD NOTES / CONDITION

Reading surplus condition grades

Grade labels are useful only when the seller explains them.

Do not assume a universal scale

Grade A, Grade B, used and unissued can mean different things across sellers. Read the seller’s own grading description. Ask what wear, repairs and missing parts are acceptable within the stated grade. A letter without a definition tells you little.

Unissued still needs inspection

An item can remain unused while aging in storage. Ask about odor, corrosion, coating breakdown and fabric damage. Inspect the same stress points you would check on a used example. A new-looking stock photograph is not a guarantee about the item in the parcel.

Check how the item is selected

Some sellers photograph one example and ship another from a pile. Read for representative-photo language and ask whether you can see the actual item. If you cannot, evaluate the description of the allowed variation and the return terms.

Price the defects that matter to you

A repaired seam may be acceptable for wear but undesirable for a collection. A missing strap adds cost and a compatibility question. List the defects that change your decision, then compare similarly described listings. Do not compare a complete example with an incomplete one by headline price alone.
