How to measure a surplus jacket
A label is a starting point. A jacket you already own is the better reference.
Measure your reference jacket
Lay a jacket that fits you flat, close it without pulling the fabric and measure from armpit to armpit. Then record shoulder width, sleeve length and the back length from the base of the collar. Use the same units as the seller, and ask which endpoints they used if the measurement is ambiguous.
Allow room for the intended layers
Compare like with like. A field jacket worn over a sweater needs a different fit from a shirt worn alone. Do not treat a flat garment measurement as your body measurement. Vintage garments may be altered or may have shrunk, so the printed size alone is an unreliable shortcut.
Read length separately from width
A broad chest measurement does not ensure sleeves or body length will work. Look for short, regular or long designations where present, but still request actual measurements. Check cuffs, drawcords and adjustment features for condition rather than assuming they solve any mismatch.
Make a return plan
If the seller provides only a size label, request measurements before purchasing. Check the listing’s return terms, postage and your own location. International return shipping can make a trial fit expensive. Save your reference measurements so the next jacket search starts with useful numbers.
